Know Your Windows: Reading the Energy Label
Make Sure Your Replacement Windows are Energy Efficient
The energy efficiency of replacement windows has become a quality that the entire nation is watching out for, even in Tulsa. For windows like the EnviroView line we carry at Community Builders of Tulsa, this is less of an issue since they carry the coveted blue Energy Star® label. This distinct marking indicates the window has met and surpassed the government standards for energy efficient qualification. In other words, you can trust these replacement windows to perform with optimal energy efficiency. However, it’s not always that easy to identify a high-performance window and some homeowners want to know the specifics that the Energy Star® label doesn’t always communicate. It’s for reasons like these that the NFRC label is present. The NFRC label is standard on all windows communicates ratings for four aspects of your window.
What Does it All Mean?
- U-Factor: This number tells you how well the window will retain heat in your home and protect against heat transfer. A good rating is on the lower side of a range between .20 – 1.20.
- Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC): Indicates the windows ability to protect your home against radiant heat generated by the sun. A lower SHGC number between 0 and 1 is what you want.
- Air leakage: This rating is important because it tells you how much air can potentially leak through window’s hardware. Lower numbers mean there’s less air leakage possible through the hardware. This measured in a range of .1 to .3.
- Visible Transmittance (VT): The VT rating of a window measures its potential for “daylighting”, which is the potential for illumination of the interior with natural lighting. A higher number between the scale of 0 and 1 means that more natural lighting gets through.
